THE SANDF GROUP LIFE INSURANCE SCHEME (GLIS)     (PART 1)

In accordance with the Defence Act and the General Regulations, it is compulsory for all Uniformed Members of the DOD to contribute to the Group Life Insurance Scheme (GLIS).

The GLIS was introduced to provide for, and financially assist the next of kin of SANDF members in the event of the death of such a member and in certain circumstances, should a member be disabled.

Recently the Board of Trustees has revised the rules of the GLIS. The aim of this revision was to ensure that SANDF members are not underinsured.

A further aim is to promote personal accountability among SANDF members for their GLIS premiums within the business rules of the scheme.

Therefore, it is important for every SANDF member to study this information bulletin attentively and use it to ensure that the correct premium is deducted from his/her salary.

 Rules of the Scheme

The rules of the GLIS are expounded in the Business Rule Table. Note that, in certain circumstances, members are afforded the opportunity to choose between lower and higher premiums.

In order to ensure that there are no claims against the State, it was promulgated in cases where a member’s status has changed, that the onus would be on the member to apply for a higher premium, or in certain circumstances, for a lower premium.
