HIV KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND PRACTICE (KAP) SURVEY: 2006

The 2006 HIV KAP Survey begins in March 2006. This study measures changes in HIV-related knowledge, attitudes and sexual practices of DOD members.

Just over 5,800 DOD members participated in the 2005 study, which yielded an 8% sample of the military population.

The excellent response to the 2005 survey is greatly appreciated and has helped to provide valuable information about HIV in the DOD.

The results of the study can be used to develop new focus areas in response to the disease. Young privates, for example, again emerge as a highly vulnerable subgroup of the DOD, to be focused on with renewed effort.

It is also noteworthy that people report symptoms of sexually transmitted infections, but only a small percentage actually seek appropriate medical treatment.

The 2006 KAP study is already under way. Data collection is scheduled to take place over the period March and April 2006.

All uniformed and civilian members of the DOD will be targeted, in order to obtain inputs and feedback from a representative sample.

The SAMHS HIV nodal point at regional level has been tasked to coordinate the collection of KAP data. Commanding Officers and managers are urged to give their active support to the SAMHS members who will collect the data.
To become involved with research is really an important activity that contributes towards the greater good of the total community. To give of your time is a noble gesture and much appreciated.

You can rest assured that your contribution will add value far beyond your own involvement and will assist in the continuous improvement of the DOD response towards the effective management of HIV and AIDS.
