ON 16 JUNE 2006 NATIONAL YOUTH DAY WILL BE
CELEBRATED IN A BIG WAY
On a chilly Wednesday on the 16th of June
1976 students from all the schools in Soweto
engaged in a peaceful demonstration against the
imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of
education, and pitifully the police turned to
violence and maimed, killed, imprisoned, and
drove to exile hundreds if not thousands of the
students.
30 years ago the students’ protest spread
like wild fire, reaching every township in the
country.
After South Africa established democracy,
June 16 was declared National Youth Day.
This day is dedicated to the youth of South
Africa. On this day the youth honour the heroic
deeds of all the youths of the country and take
stock to the challenges facing the present-day
youth.
The Department of Defence will join hands in
celebrating this historic National Youth Day on
16 June 2006.
The Defence Staff Council has approved the
SANDF’s participation in a joint ceremonial
event in a Youth Day Parade as part of the
formal programme.
The Youth Parade Day will start at 12 o’clock
at the FNB Stadium in Soweto.
The Chief of the Air Force, Lt Gen C.Gagiano,
will conduct the parade on behalf of the C
SANDF, Gen Godfrey Nhlanhla Ngwenya.
President Thabo Mbeki will officiate at the
National Youth celebrations programme on 16 June
2006 at the FNB Stadium.
The Chief of the SA Army Lt Gen Solly Shoke,
will provide an officer as the aide-de-camp to
the President. The National Ceremonial Guards
will provide the Guard of Honour for the Youth
Day Celebration Parade.
In addition, there will be a band, and a gun
troop for the firing of a 21-gun salute.
The Chief of the SA Air Force will provide
two officers as chief coordinators of the parade
and one warrant officer to handle the parade
arrangements. An announcer for the Youth Day
parade will be provided.
The Air Force will contribute one officer as
an aide-de-camp and a senior officer to seat all
the Department of Defence guests.
The Air Force will provide a salute flight
consisting of two Oryx helicopters that will fly
the South African and SANDF flags, and conduct
an air display lasting 4-5 minutes by the
Rooivalk helicopter.
The Chief of the SA Navy, V Adm Refiloe
Mudimu, will appoint an officer as door opener.
The Surgeon General Lt Gen Vejaynand Ramlakan,
will contribute one officer as a door opener,
and he will supervise medical support at all
times.
The Chief of the Military Police Agency, Brig
Gen Moguruti Joseph Ledwaba, will provide
ceremonial motorcycle escort for the President
on the 16 June 2006.
Uniformed members must wear dress code No 1B.
As far as civilians are concerned, men should
wear lounge suits with medals, and ladies
preferably no hats.
