DOD PARTICIPATION IN COMRADES MARATHON 2006

On 16 June 2006, the SANDF athletes/runners will once again participate in the Comrades Marathon over a distance of 87km from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

Approximately 231 DOD runners will participate in the race and there will be at least 28 ladies among the participants.

The DOD, including the Reserve Force Club Natal Carbineers as a combined club, has the largest club entry for this year.

Of the 12000 athletes participating, 438 will be foreign athletes.

The DOD will have a special stand at the Oval in Pietermaritzburg where all the families and friends of the runners will get together to watch the race as the runners enter the stadium.

The stand can be identified by the National Flag, SANDF Flag and the flags of the four Services. These flags will be

displayed with the banners in front of the stand for easy identification.

To promote the corporate image of the DOD with respect to the Comrades and to record the DOD participation, Col Zirk Lourens will liaise with SABC TV for coverage and live interview will be conducted with him after the race at approximately 15H00. A radio interview is also planned for the day.

The members of the Area Military Health Unit KZN will provide a water point en route and there will be physiotherapy services at the SANDF stand located at the “FINISH”.

They will assist participants who may be in need of medical care on completion of the race.

A total of 17 participating athletes have already completed more than 10 races.

Of these 17, Col Zirk Lourens and Mr Richard Hammill will be running

their 22nd Comrades Marathon.

The SANDF and members of the Defence Staff Council, as well as the management of the SANDF Road Runners Association, wish all the participants a successful race and trust that their personal goals for the day will be met.
