YOUTH SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGE
South Africa is in the process of finalising
the national strategy for sustainable
development (NSSD) as part of the agreements
reached by governments, representatives of
non-government organisations and business
leaders at the world summit on sustainable
development held in Johannesburg in September
2002.
As part of raising awareness about of the
strategy school children, high school students
and youth are required to express their
understanding of sustainable development through
a campaign in the form of a competition or other
challenges.
There will be three-fold challenges in the
fields of art, essays and a youth project.
In the art challenge the competition involves
children not older than 12 years producing their
understanding and interpretation of sustainable
development in art form. The school of the 1st
winning entrant will receive R5 000 to be used
for art equipment or other thins required by
his/her school. R3 000 and R2 000 will be for
the second and third winning entrants
respectively. The individual students will
receive R2 500, R1 500, and R1 000 respectively.
As far as the essay challenge is concerned
grade 11 and 12 secondary pupils will write on
the topic “how does my future career contribute
to sustainable development”. The 1st winning
entrant will receive R15 000, while R10 000 and
R7 000 will go to the second and third winning
entrants respectively. The schools will receive
r1 000 each.
The youth project challenge requests youth
associations, clubs, organisations and groups to
develop a business plan on an idea of
implementing SD in the area. The youth must
develop a business plan on a youth project to
advance sustainable development.
