STUDY OPPORTUNITIES FOR 2007 AT THE MILITARY ACADEMY

The Military Academy is an educational and training unit of the SANDF. It houses the Faculty of Military Science of the University of Stellenbosch which provides university education for all members of the DOD.

The Academy provides professional military development to young, career-orientated officers who pursue their studies residentially.

On successful completion of undergraduate studies the student is awarded the prestigious BMil degree from the University of Stellenbosch.

The Military Academy provides the following study options:

  • Residential studies with preference given to MSD students.
  • Distance Education.
  • Postgraduate studies.

The general and academic entrance requirements for full-time residential studies (degree/certificate) are as follows:

  • Successful completion of the Officers’ Formative course within the candidate’s Service and in the rank group of Candidate Officer or Midshipman (SAN) to Lieutenant or Sub Lieutenant (SAN) on entering the Military Academy.
  • Appropriate medical classification.
  • Matriculation or conditional exemption with a D aggregate.
  • Compliance with the minimum programme-specific entrance requirements as prescribed by the University of Stellenbosch.
  • Recommendation by the Military Academy Selection Board.

However, it should be noted that accommodation is only provided for single individuals.

There are five programmes presented at certificate and degree level in the following directions:

  • BMil Programme in Technology and Defence Management.
  • BMil Programme in Technology.
  • BMil Programme in Security and African Studies.
  • BMil Programme in Human and Organisational Development.
  • BMil Programme in Organisational and Resource Management.

The Distance Education study option allows students a maximum of six years to complete their studies.

This option is available to all members of the SANDF and PSAP of the DOD.

The Distance Education options offers the following three programmes:

  • BMil Programme in Security and African Studies.
  • BMiI Programme in Human and Organisational Development.
  • BMil Programme in Organisation and Resource Management.
  • The entry requirements for Distance Education are as follows:
  • Candidates must be computer literate by the time they commence with their studies.
  • Compliance with the minimum academic entrance requirements as prescribed by the University of Stellenbosch.
  • Matriculation or conditional exemption with a D aggregate.
  • Compliance with the minimum programme-specific entrance requirements as prescribed by the University of Stellenbosch.
  • Recommendation by the Military Academy Selection Board.

Candidates will be expected to attend a residential phase of one week per semester every academic year at the Military Academy.

During this phase the home units will be responsible for the S&T of members.
Candidates (excluding MSD students) must apply for both options by means of a formal letter to his/her Officer Commanding or supervisor.

The letter of application must include the following information:

  • The intended direction of undergraduate studies.
  • The foreseen advantages of such studies for the candidate’s career development.
  • Recommendations by the Officer Commanding or Supervisor and Career Manager.
  • Copy of matriculation certificate.
  • Copy of academic records of post-matric studies.

The Military Academy will psychometrically evaluate all candidates from the different Services interested in the above studies from 7 to 11 August 2006 at the Air Force College, Thaba Tshwane, Pretoria.

The psychometric evaluation of the SA Navy MSD members will be conducted on 3 August 2006 at the Naval College, in Gordon’s Bay.

After completion of the psychometric tests, the Military Academy Selection Board will take place from 14 to 18 August 2006 for all Services at the Army Gymnasium, Heidelberg.

All interested members must note that units are responsible for S&T claims during the selection process.

Units are to forward applications, which include the Officer Commanding’s approval, and contact numbers of candidates to consult their respective Career Managers.

Services must supply the Faculty Administrator of the Military Academy with a consolidated name-list of candidates by 28 July 2006.
