TAKE NOTE
ONE-DAY SEMINAR: DIRECTORS OF PRIVATE
COMPANIES, TRUSTEES, MEMBERS OF CLOSE
CORPORATIONS AND SECTIONAL TITLE COMPANIES ON 17
OCTOBER 2006
In compliance with HR Strategy 2010, members
of the SANDF are advised to pursue second
careers.
Some officials are appointed to serve as
directors of companies, on boards of trustees,
as members of close corporations and sectional
titles companies by virtue of their positions in
the DOD.
Appointment in any such capacity has some
legal implications, and recently judgment was
passed that individuals officiating as board
members or as trustees should personally be held
responsible for losses incurred.
In view of the above-mentioned requirement, a
one-day seminar will be held on 17 October 2006.
Attendance: All DOD officials appointed as
directors of companies, on boards of
trustees, as members of close corporations
and sectional titles companies are to attend
this seminar.
The seminar has been arranged for 200
delegates and if vacancies are not taken by SMS
members’ nominations from MMS will be accepted.
The venue for the one day seminar is Pierre
van Ryneveld Hall, SAAF HQ, Dequar Avenue,
Pretoria.
The seminar will commence at 08:00 and last

PRESENTATION OF A HALF-DAY SEMINAR ON THE
LAW OF ARMED CONFLICT (LOAC) TO DOD TOP
OFFICIALS ON 5 OCTOBER 2006.
The Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) was
instituted to govern the conduct of armed
conflict.
Through the Programme of Civic Education, and
assisted by the International Committee of the
Red Cross (ICRC), LOAC was institutionalized in
the training programmes of the SANDF in 1997.
To sensitise the DOD top structure, a
half-day seminar on LOAC was held in 2001.
Since then five years have elapsed and the
DOD and its top structure have also changed
considerably.
It is therefore deemed expedient to present a
similar seminar to the DOD’s top officials. The
seminar will be held on 5 Oct 06, and will be
hosted and sponsored by the ICRC.
In compliance with the promulgated DOD
Directives and Instruction, all members of the
plenary Defence Staff Council (inclusive of all
members of the Military Council) are to attend.
DOD members of the Civic Education Evaluation
and Advisory Board (CEEAB) are also to attend
the seminar, whilst the Ministry of Defence and
civilian members of the CEEAB are to be invited
to attend.
The slot allocation for the seminar is as
follows:
Ministry of Defence (3), Secretary for
Defence (2), Chief of the SANDF (2), Chief
Policy and Planning (2), Chief Financial Officer
(2), Chief of Joint Operations (2), Chief of the
Army (3), Chief of the Air Force (3), Chief of
the Navy (3), Surgeon General (3), Chief of
Defence Intelligence (2), Chief of Corporate
Staff (5), Chief of Logistics (1), Chief Command
Management Information Systems (1), Chief of
Military Police Agency (2), Chief of Acquisition
and Procurement (1), Inspector General DOD (1)
and Chief Human Resources (3).
The venue for the one day seminar is the
Villa Sterne Boutique Hotel, 212 Johan Rissik
Drive, Waterkloof Ridge.
The seminar will commence at 08:00 and last
until 14:00,
and the dress code for participants is jacket
and tie.
DOD officials attending this seminar are to
submit their nominations by 11 September 2006.
The contact persons are Col F. Cillié
(012) 355-5544 and Ms S. Tredoux (012) 355-5014.
A nomination form is available in DOD
Instruction C SANDF/R/106/30/6 dated 22 August
