THE EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES CHIEF DIRECTORATE (EOCD) HOSTS SADC WOMEN’S PEACE TABLE

The Equal Opportunities Chief Directorate (EOCD) is hosting the SADC Women’s Peace Table Seminar from 27 to 29 November 2006, at the Centurion Lake Hotel.

The objectives of the seminar are as follows:

Share and learn best practices relating to status of gender equity emerging from the SADC Defence Forces.
Review the challenges and opportunities for the promotion of gender equity in the various Defence Forces.
Formulate strategies for accelerated equity across the Security Sector in the region.
Contribute to regional cohesion in terms of the promotion of gender equity.
The Minister of Defence, Mr Mosiuoa Lekota, will open the seminar.

Services and Divisions have been requested to nominate five delegates each.

Other participants, apart from the SADC Senior Women Officers, will be researchers from the Defence Security Sector, the Office of the Status of Women in the Presidency, the SAPS, Correctional Services, the Department of Justice, the Department of Foreign Relations, SAWID and the SANDF Spouses’ Forum.

For South Africa, the Woman’s Peace Table will build on the recommendation that came out of the 2nd National Conference of Women in Defence, which was held from 24 to 26 May 2006, which facilitated dialogue of the role on women in the transformation of the security sector in the country.
