September 2008: No 52/08

GRIPEN TO BE COMMISSIONED AT THE AAD 2008
EXPO IN CAPE TOWN ON 17 SEPTEMBER 2008
The commissioning of the Gripen will coincide
with the opening of the African Aerospace and
Defence (AAD) Expo at AFB Ysterplaat, Cape Town
on 17 September 2008 where the Minister of
Defence, Mr Mosiuoa Lekota and Chief of the Air
Force, Lt Gen Carlo Gagiano, will officiate.
The AAD is considered a showcase of the
largest exhibition of land, sea and air forces.
The Department of Defence (DOD), as part of the
AAD partnership, will exploit this event to
ensure maximum local and international
participation by exhibitors, trade visitors,
official delegations and other stakeholders.
AFB Ysterplaat, against the backdrop of Table
Mountain, will provide the setting for the only
exposition of its kind in Africa and will
feature more than 400 exhibitors from at least
25 countries, including an estimated 40
delegates from foreign Defence Forces.
The importance of the AAD to the DOD includes
the opportunity to profile the primary
objectives of the DOD in support of Government
objectives and priorities. This year’s show
coincides with the South African government’s
strategy for strengthening, growing and forging
a worldwide alliance for its domestic aerospace,
air transport, maritime, land systems, security
and space industries, while highlighting DOD
themes that include: Transformation
(Rejuvenation of the SANDF) and State Readiness.
The international show, which will be open to
