AN UPDATE ON MEDICAL HELP WHEN ON HOLIDAY
The following information is crucial to all
members and dependants in the SANDF. Medical
consultations with private medical practitioners
will not be paid for by the SAMHS (SANDF) unless
prior authorization has been obtained by the
Medical Area Military Health Unit (AMHU) of that
region.
In the event of a real (life-threatening)
emergency, a private practitioner may be
consulted, provided the nearest Area Military
Health Unit (AMHU) is informed during or soon
after the emergency.
Should members need to utilize a medical
facility which is not military affiliated, they
must obtain medical authorisation from the AMHU
concerned at the telephone numbers indicated. If
there is no reply, members must first contact
the OC of the AMHU. Failing this, contact the
Area Military Health Formation at 012 671 5256
or Tertiary Health Formation with respect to
Military Hospitals at 012 671 5000 or 5011.
Prior to departing on holiday, members must
ensure that they familiarize themselves with the
contact details of those regions through
which/to which they are traveling.
If members wish to travel beyond the borders
of the RSA in their private capacity, it is
recommended that they take health insurance as
their medical benefits do not extend beyond the
border. Members should also take note of the
fact that Prophylactic Travel Medication and
Immunisations required in their private capacity
when traveling outside the borders of the RSA
will be at their own cost.
