DOD YOUTH DAY CELEBRATIONS-19 JUNE 2009 

In the South African context, the month of June is regarded as Youth Month. The Department of Defence will once again join the nationwide celebrations in commemoration of the 33rd anniversary of the June 16 Soweto uprising. The day will be dedicated to the department’s MSD members.

The central theme for this year’s celebration is “entrenching our democracy by promoting Youth Cohesion through Discipline and Sport”.

The Minister of Defence, Ms Lindiwe Sisulu, accompanied by the leaders of the DOD, will conduct the grand opening of the Youth Day celebrations at 10h00.

Taking cognisance of what is expected during the Youth Month, the Chief Directorate Transformation Management, in collaboration with Services and Divisions, will be hosting the DOD Youth Day celebrations for members in the DOD.
The celebrations will be held at the Thaba Tshwane military sports grounds.

All DOD members/ employees, including the Reserve Force, are welcome to join in the celebration. The dress code for spectators/ supernumeries during the parade is dress code No. 1b, dress code for members on Parade is per instruction, while the dress code for PSAP members is the equivalent. Members of the Thaba Tshwane community are welcome to participate in this event. Spectators and / or visitors are also allowed to wear civilian clothes.

The day will commence with a ceremonial guard parade, an opening address by the MOD, a drill competition by the 2009 January intake of the various services and a prize-giving ceremony for the winners of the competition.
The sports activities will take up the rest of the day and will include six-aside soccer, seven-aside touch rugby, volleyball and netball.

People with disabilities are encouraged to attend. A demonstration of various sporting codes for people with disabilities will take place. A sign language interpreter will be present.

The Youth Day activities end at 15h00. Services and Divisions are requested to release members to be part of this commemoration.
