GOVERNMENT COMMUNICATION AWARDS 2010 

Government Communications Information Systems (GCIS) was mandated by government in 2002 to explore ways in which an Awards mechanism could be introduced for government communicators.

This is intended to recognise improved delivery, innovation and excellence in the government communications profession and to further encourage communicators to work hard.

To add to the enthusiasm of the awards, GCIS will this year at the ninth Government Communication Awards (GCA) introduce an award for internal communicators. This award will look at internal communication projects as a big part of the work behind succesful government communication campaigns and projects done by internal communicators.

Nominations are now open; Services and Divisions can submit their communication actions that have taken place over the past year in order to be considered for entry into the annual (GCA) 2010.

COMMUNICATION GUIDELINES

Nature of Communication Activities. Communication activities may include media events, public relations activities, visits and events, open days, participation in shows and exhibitions, campaigns, etc.
 

Nominations may also consist of events that present communication opportunities, such as support of the South African Military Health Service (SAMHS) during the hospital strikes, the FIFA 2010 World Cup, support of the Batho Pele concept, “People first.,” etc.
 

PRACTICAL GUIDANCE

Entries are to be entered according to a communication plan and must include information on the following:

  • Aim.
  • Objectives.
  • Audience/target markets.
  • Challenges and obstacles overcome.
  • Strategy.
  • Budget details.
  • Evaluation.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

More than one entry per Service, Division, Unit, etc may be submitted. Only entries in respect of activities that have taken place from 1 August 2009 to 31July 2010 may be submitted. The main entry should be no longer than 600 words. This figure excludes appendices such as DVDs, newspaper clippings or other supporting documentation.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • All entries must be submitted according to the following requirements:
  • The Service must submit all entries concerning a particular Service simultaneously.
  • Each nomination must be clearly marked with the correct names, contact persons and details relevant to the entry.
     

COMPETITION SCHEDULE

The following schedule will apply:

  • Services/Divisions and Directorates will receive all the entries from their respective units, formations, ships, etc.

Submission to DCC. The entries must be submitted by hand to DCC by no later than 10 September 2010.Final Evaluation. The panel of adjudicators will consist of representatives of the DCC, as well as two or more members of external communication organizations. Final adjudication will take place on 30 September 2010.

Entries that comply with all the requirements will be entered for the Government Communicators’ Awards 2010.
